FAQ'S

useful CBD info

for you and your family.

what is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol.  It is the second most prevalent cannabinoid molecule produced within the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa.  Purelov products use PCR (phytocannabinoid rich) oil from hemp that is organically grown in the USA.  The broad spectrum oil that is extracted from these hemp plants retains multiple cannabinoids and terpenes, but with no THC.  Broad spectrum PCR oil is Federally legal under the Hemp Act of 2018.

what does CBD do?

CBD interacts directly with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) that exists in all mammals, including people, dogs and horses.

what is the endocannabinoid system (ECS)?

The ECS is a complex cell-signaling system in the body that researchers continue to study.  UCLA health reports, “It appears the main function of the endocannabinoid system is to maintain bodily homeostasis — biological harmony in response to changes in the environment.”

“Research initially suggested endocannabinoid receptors were only present in the brain and nerves, but scientists later found that the receptors are present throughout the body, including our skin, immune cells, bone, fat tissue, liver, pancreas, skeletal muscle, heart, blood vessels, kidney, and gastrointestinal tract.   We now know the endocannabinoid system is involved in a wide variety of processes, including pain, memory, mood, appetite, stress, sleep, metabolism, immune function, and reproductive function.   Endocannabinoids are arguably one of the most widespread and versatile signaling molecules known to man.”  (https://www.uclahealth.org/cannabis/human-endocannabinoid-system)

what is CBD used for?

A recent paper from the International Journal of Molecular Science explored the functions of the ECS and the cannabinoid receptors (Zou & Kumar 2018).  Therein, the ECS was linked to the following bodily functions:

  • appetite and digestion
  • metabolism
  • chronic pain
  • inflammation and other immune system responses
  • mood
  • learning and memory
  • motor control
  • sleep
  • cardiovascular system function
  • muscle formation
  • bone remodeling and growth
  • liver function
  • reproductive system function
  • stress
  • skin and nerve function

how much CBD will I need to get results?

This is one of the first questions asked by new CBD users.

The answer is complicated by the fact that everyone responds differently to CBD.  In other words, you and a friend with a similar condition might take the same CBD dose from the same source, and yet experience different reactions.

So, how do we explain this?

From what we know so far about the endocannabinoid system (ECS), factors such as weight, metabolism, our genes, age, sex, and the “tone” of our ECS, all affect a person’s reaction to a particular dose of CBD.

In short, it isn’t possible to determine one dosage that fits everyone equally.

In this article, which draws from published research and the observations of experienced cannabis practitioners, we’d like to present some CBD starting amount guidelines that we’ve found useful.

Starting Amount:  Rules of Thumb

  1. You will have to experiment to find the amount and the delivery method for CBD that works best for you.  Your goal is to establish the lowest possible effective amount.  According to Drs. E. Russo and C. MacCallum, the best approach when it comes to correct dosing is, “start low, go slow”.   Begin with a small amount the first week and increase after 5-7 days.
  2. Here is another saying in the industry: “small amounts of CBD for small problems; larger amounts for larger problems.”  A common recommendation suggests that for an adult taking CBD for general health maintenance and balancing, 25 mg per day is a good starting amount.  Taking that before bed is a good way to start.  Increase as needed.
  3. If you are looking for help from CBD for pain from arthritis, sports injury, back pain, or anxiety, you will likely require a larger amount.  Often folks with these issues are taking other medications, so we recommend that you consult your health professional for advice.
  4. We believe broad-spectrum extracts are most effective. Preclinical research indicates that Broad spectrum CBD-rich oil is effective at much lower doses than CBD isolate.
  5. Some practitioners recommend that after trying what you think is a reasonable starting amount (based on your weight and severity of symptoms), you can try increasing the daily amount every week or two by 25mg until symptoms are relieved.  It is also important to decrease the amount of CBD if you experience any worsening of symptoms or adverse effects.
  6. We would like to help you track your progress with CBD.  You will receive a purelov client survey form with your purchase to help you document your response to CBD.   We hope you find it helpful on your CBD journey.
  1. The Mayo Clinic, the U.S.-based nonprofit academic medical center, released a review that can be used as a starting point for CBD dosage measurements for various ailments, combining scientific research, publications, and traditional and expert opinions. Based on information in the review, it might be helpful to start with a dose of 2.5 – 10mg of CBD to reduce anxiety or 160mg for inflammation.

how do I decide what to buy?

The CBD industry is currently unregulated and there are many, and often confusing, terms being used by advertisers to describe products.  It is important for you to understand what you are getting in any CBD product you purchase.  Individuals who must undergo and pass drug testing need to understand how to avoid THC while still benefitting from CBD.  We recommend only buying CBD from sellers who make available independent laboratory test certificates available for each product.

are purelov CBD products tested for safety?

Purelov CBD  products are put through extensive testing.  The reports are available on our product pages.  Additionally, all our products contain CBD sourced from organically grown USA plants.  The test results show that they do not contain pesticides or unsafe levels of heavy metals, microbials, or residual solvents.   The test results also show that our CBD products are completely free of THC.

does CBD get you high?

Purelov CBD is formulated and tested to assure you it will not get you high.  Purelov does not use oil from the marijuana plant.  Marijuana oil, by contrast, contains small amounts of CBD but also contains enough THC to produce a “high” and is illegal in many states.

why take CBD with curcumin?

Curcumin is a polyphenol which comes from the turmeric plant (Curcuma longa), a member of the ginger family.   Curcumin is useful as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent which makes it helpful for those people and animals with osteoarthritis (OA), a degenerative inflammatory condition.  It might also help bodies recover from post exercise inflammation and soreness.  Additionally, research indicates that curcuminoids are effective scavengers of free-radicals and also are effective and safe C-reactive protein -(CRP) lowering agents.   Due to its anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties it can be helpful for bodies that don’t  yet suffer from any diagnosed conditions.   In a study of healthy adults, curcumin significantly reduced triglyceride levels, increased nitrous oxide and had other beneficial impacts on the liver and brain.   Curcuminoids have been approved by the FDA as “Generally Recognized as Safe”.

Turmeric is considered an unproven treatment, though its use is supported by convincing modern preliminary research, and though it has been used in traditional herbalism for thousands of years.  There is no standard dosage by weight — ask your health care provider for advice.

what do the different CBD terms mean?

Firstly, let’s differentiate types of CBD from different sources.

CBD stands for cannabidiol. It is the second most prevalent cannabinoid molecule produced within the cannabis sativa or hemp plant. Purelov products use PCR (phytocannabinoid rich) hemp oil that is organically grown in the USA. The broad spectrum oil that is extracted from these hemp plants retains multiple cannabinoids and terpenes but with no THC. Broad spectrum PCR oil is Federally legal under the Hemp Act of 2018.

Some other products are made with full spectrum hemp oil. That oil differs from our broad spectrum oil because it does contain active levels of THC.

Purelov does not use oil from the marijuana plant. That oil contains small amounts of CBD but also contains enough THC to produce a “high” and is illegal in many states.

Some products contain CBD isolate. CBD isolate does not contain the beneficial terpenes and other cannabinoids that are found in broad or full spectrum oils.

Lastly, some products are made with hemp seed oil. Hemp seed oil does not contain CBD.

These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

does it matter how oil is extracted from the hemp plant?

Yes!  Hemp oil must first be extracted from the plant before any of the compounds in the hemp plant can be accessed.  There are a variety of ways to do this; the optimal way uses carbon dioxide (CO2).

Purelov CBD is extracted using CO2, which results in a higher yield from the plants and preserves terpenes, without the use of harsh or potentially toxic solvents.  This method is more costly, but results in a superior product.

what form of CBD is best for me?

The answer depends on whether you are seeking a faster-acting formulation or the most economical form.  Read on to learn about purelov tinctures vs. softgels.

what is a CBD tincture?

Purelov tincture is a liquid (MCT) coconut oil infused with our PCR broad-spectrum CBD that is placed under the tongue from a graduated dropper.  The oral mucosa is full of tiny capillaries that absorb the compounds quickly.  This tincture can also be applied topically.  A tincture will likely go to work sooner than a softgel that is swallowed, and is a good choice for anyone who can’t take capsules.  Purelov tinctures are alcohol free.

what is a CBD softgel?

A purelov CBD softgel is a gelatin capsule that contains water-soluble PCR broad-spectrum hemp oil, along with other minor phytocannabinoids and naturally present terpenes.  Our formulation results in a nanoemulsion-based delivery system that yields better absorption and improved efficacy.  Most people swallow these softgels and they start to work after being digested in the stomach (although we know some clients who puncture the capsule and apply the oil to their skin).  It takes only slightly longer for it to go to work than a tincture.

how do I know how much CBD purelov products contain?

The amount of CBD in each product is clearly marked on the label, and the test results confirm that amount.

will purelov CBD help my problem?

CBD has been used by many people with good results.  More clinical studies are being performed, both with animals and people, so scientists can learn more about the benefits.  Purelov recommends you seek the advice of your health professional to learn what is right for you.  These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

will CBD help my dog with anxiety?

CBD has been shown to be helpful for pets just as it is for humans due to its balancing, calming, and anti-inflammatory properties.  Dogs can experience anxiety from a number of sources: separation from their humans, loud noises like thunder or fireworks, or even car rides.  Our purelov Calm and Balance 10 mg CBD chews can be helpful for your pup with anxiety.  They combine premium CBD with other beneficial natural ingredients that help with anxiety.  They taste of bacon and vanilla and are made with love in Vermont.

will CBD help my dog with hip or back pain?

CBD has been shown to be helpful for pets just as it is for humans due to its  anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.  The Cornell Veterinary School study referenced on our site discusses how CBD is effective for osteoarthritis in dogs.  Each purelov Hip and Joint formula chew contains 10 mg CBD with curcumin along with glucosamine and chondroitin – a one pill solution for your dog.  They taste of bacon and vanilla and are made with love in Vermont.

do purelov CBD pet chews contain THC?

No — and you can see the testing certificate on each product page.  Our chews contain what they say they do:  2 or 10 mg CBD, safe ingredients, and no THC.

what does anxiety look like in dogs?

Dogs that pace, hyperventilate (breathe fast) whimper, push you for attention and shake are likely showing signs of anxiety.  Sometimes this progresses to chewing, not eating or not drinking when left alone.  These dogs could be considered candidates for purelov Calm and Balance chews.  We recommend you take our products with you and discuss with your vet.  These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.  This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

why do purelov Hip and Joint dog chews contain curcumin?

Curcumin is a polyphenol which comes from the turmeric plant (Curcuma longa), a member of the ginger family.   Curcumin is useful as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent which makes it helpful for those with conditions like osteoarthritis (OA), a degenerative inflammatory condition.  It might also help bodies recover from post exercise inflammation and soreness.  Additionally, research indicates that curcuminoids are effective scavengers of free-radicals and also are effective and safe C-reactive protein -(CRP) lowering agents.   Due to its anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties it can be helpful for people who don’t suffer yet with any diagnosed conditions.   In a study of healthy adults curcumin significantly reduced triglyceride levels and increased nitrous oxide and had other beneficial impact on the liver and brain.   Curcuminoids have been approved by the FDA as “Generally Recognized as Safe”.
