Why broad spectrum hemp is better than CBD isolate
Posted on October 14th, 2020 to hemp education
The type of CBD oil that you buy matters. When buying a CBD product it is important to choose one with transparent labeling and laboratory tests that back up the label claims. You should know exactly what’s in the products you use. Is it a full spectrum product? Broad spectrum (THC-free)? CBD isolate? We suggest you use a high quality broad spectrum oil, not an isolate or an oil from hemp seeds. Read on to learn why…
what is CBD isolate?
First of all it’s important to know the difference between CBD isolate, full spectrum hemp extracts, and broad spectrum hemp extracts. CBD isolate is a crystalline solid or powder form of CBD which has been refined to the point where it does not contain any beneficial terpenes or additional cannabinoids. Full spectrum and broad spectrum oils will contain not only CBD, but also a range of terpenes and minor cannabinoids that contribute to the overall therapeutic effect.
how is CBD isolate made?
The extraction process used to create this isolated form of CBD strips out other cannabinoids and terpenes. The process is usually completed in a lab using CO2 or cold water extraction techniques. When using a CBD isolate, you do not receive any of the value added from the entourage effect found in broad spectrum hemp infused products.
what are terpenes? a closer look…
Terpenes are isoprenoids (a collection of isoprene molecules). Also known as hydrocarbons, these complex molecular structures are found in a multitude of different plants throughout the world. Terpenes are the chemical compounds that give plants their unique aromas & flavors. Limonene, for example, is the terpene that makes lemons smell “lemony” and Pinene is the terpene responsible for making pine needles smell “piney”. These terpenes are also found in cannabis plants!
there are no terpenes in CBD isolate
The fact that CBD isolate does not contain terpenes is extremely noteworthy. One particularly important terpene that will be missing when you choose a CBD isolate over a broad spectrum product is called beta-caryophyllene. It’s found in most broad spectrum hemp extracts and full spectrum CBD oil. This terpene has been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect.
without terpenes like beta-caryophyllene, CBD products may have less efficacy
It’s likely that beta-caryophyllene’s presence in a broad spectrum oil greatly increases the effectiveness of the oil to help with so many of the inflammation problems humans and animals face, including: arthritis, bursitis, rosacea, acne, irritable bowel syndrome and post-exercise soreness among many others.
research is being completed on more cannabinoids & terpenes everyday
Beta-caryophyllene is likely just the tip of the iceberg. Researchers are hopeful that as they continue to perform more clinical studies on various strains of the cannabis plant, they will learn more about how different terpenes and cannabinoids offer specific and diversified benefits to humans as well as animals.
what if I find a product that only has hemp seed oil?
Lastly, some products are made with hemp seed oil. Hemp seeds do not contain CBD. CBD is found in the resin of the flowers (aka buds) and leaves of the hemp plant, not the seeds. We highly recommend asking for a report from a reputable independent lab for any product that only contains hemp seed oil to determine if there are actually any cannabinoids found in the product.
why do we suggest products with broad spectrum hemp extract?
Choosing products infused with broad spectrum hemp extract over a CBD isolate is important because a high quality broad spectrum hemp extract will not only contain CBD, but it will also contain other minor cannabinoids and terpenes which researchers believe play a large role in the overall benefits of hemp. All of these cannabinoids and terpenes work synergistically to enhance the benefits of the other ingredients. The sum of the whole is greater than the parts alone. This is called the “entourage effect”. This synergistic enhancement is not present in CBD isolate, as the only compound in a CBD isolate is…CBD.
